Ahmedabad Metro is the cheapest way to move around the city. A single journey costs between ₹5 and ₹25 depending on how far you travel. If you ride more than 2 or 3 times a week, a smart card saves you 10% on every trip and pays for itself in a month.

This guide tells you what to pay, where to buy tickets, how to get a smart card, and how to use the GMRC app to plan your trips.

Ahmedabad Metro fare table

Ahmedabad Metro uses station-count based pricing. The farther you go, the more you pay.

Stations traveled Normal fare (token) Smart card fare Discount
0-3 stations ₹5 ₹4.50 10%
4-7 stations ₹10 ₹9 10%
8-11 stations ₹15 ₹13.50 10%
12-15 stations ₹20 ₹18 10%
15+ stations ₹25 ₹22.50 10%

The smart card discount applies every single trip. Buy a smart card if you commute regularly.

How to buy a token

Tokens are single-use paper tickets. Buy them at token vending machines (TVMs) at every metro station.

Step-by-step:

  1. Go to the token vending machine in the station lobby
  2. Select your destination station on the screen (or fare amount if distances aren’t labeled)
  3. Pay cash or tap your debit/credit card
  4. Collect your token
  5. Walk to the gate and tap the token on the fare reader
  6. Keep your token until you exit at the destination station

TVMs accept both cash and card payment. If the machine is broken, go to the staffed ticket counter at the station.

Tokens are valid for one journey only and must be used on the same day you buy them.

Ahmedabad Metro Smart Card

A smart card is worth buying if you use the metro 3+ times a week. You get 10% off every trip, which adds up quickly.

What it costs

  • Card itself: ₹100
  • ₹50 security deposit (refundable when you return the card)
  • ₹50 stored value (usable immediately as credit)
  • Minimum top-up: ₹50
  • Maximum stored value: ₹3,000

Where to buy

Smart cards are sold at token vending machines (TVMs) and recharge card machines (RCMs) at every metro station. You can also buy at Customer Care Centers during business hours. Pay in cash or use your debit/credit card.

How to top-up

You have three options:

  1. At the station: Use the Recharge Card Machine (RCM) or TVM with cash or card. Top-ups must be in multiples of ₹50.
  2. Via the GMRC app: Add funds using UPI, debit card, or credit card. Minimum top-up is ₹100.
  3. Online: Third-party apps like Amazon, Paytm, and WhatsApp also offer smart card recharge. Minimum is ₹100.

How long it lasts

A smart card is valid for 5 years from your last transaction. Keep your card safe. If you lose it, you lose the stored value, so treat it like cash.

Using your smart card

  1. Tap the card on the fare reader when you enter the station
  2. Travel on the metro
  3. Tap again when you exit
  4. The correct fare is deducted automatically

Don’t forget to tap out. If you don’t, your card may be locked or you’ll be charged the maximum fare.

National Common Mobility Card (NCMC)

If your bank offers an NCMC card (a special RuPay debit card), you can use it on Ahmedabad Metro and get the same 10% discount as a smart card. No separate card needed. Just tap your bank’s RuPay card at the fare gate.

Concession fares

Currently, Ahmedabad Metro does not publicly advertise concession fares for students, senior citizens, or differently abled passengers. However, the metro does have accessibility facilities for differently abled travelers, including wide automatic fare gates, ramps, wheelchair spaces, and reserved seating.

If you qualify for a concession, ask at the station counter. Policies may exist but are not widely advertised.

Ahmedabad Metro app

The official GMRC app is called “Ahmedabad Metro” and is available on iOS and Android for free.

What it does

  • Route planner: Enter start and destination stations. The app shows you fares, travel time, number of stations, and the exact route on a map.
  • Station finder: GPS locates the nearest metro stations and shows distance.
  • Station details: View platform information, gate numbers, parking, feeder bus routes, and nearby landmarks.
  • Real-time train info: See the next train’s arrival time at your station.
  • Ticket booking: Buy a QR-code ticket directly in the app and scan it at the gate (no physical token needed).
  • Smart card top-up: Add funds to your card via UPI, card, or net banking.
  • Tourist info: Find nearby restaurants, hotels, hospitals, temples, and attractions.

The app is the fastest way to plan trips and avoid queues at token machines. Download it from Google Play or the App Store.

FAQ

Can I use UPI to buy a single token?

No. Token vending machines only accept cash and debit/credit cards. To use UPI, buy a QR-code ticket via the GMRC app instead.

How much does a smart card itself cost, without any balance?

₹100. This includes ₹50 security deposit and ₹50 stored value. The ₹50 deposit is refunded when you return the card at a station.

Can I use one smart card for multiple people?

No. One card per person. Cards are registered and cannot be transferred or shared. If someone else uses your card, the stored value is at risk.

What happens if I forget to tap out?

You’ll be charged the maximum fare (₹25 for a token, ₹22.50 for a smart card). Always remember to tap your token or card at the exit gate, even if it’s for a short trip.
