Kankaria Lake has been at the centre of Ahmedabad life for 570 years. Built in 1451 AD and spread across 76 acres in Maninagar, it is today the city’s busiest public space, a working waterfront that holds a historic reservoir, a nationally-rated zoo, a children’s career city, a London-imported toy train, a tethered balloon that rises 350 feet above the skyline, and a 2.3-km promenade that fills up with the city every evening. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation spent Rs.100 crore developing it between 1999 and 2008, and it now draws over one lakh visitors per week.

This guide covers everything you need to plan a good visit: history, every major attraction with fees and quick-reference tables, entry prices, timings, metro and bus access, food, the Kankaria Carnival, and tips that most first-time visitors miss.

The history of Kankaria Lake: 570 years in the making

Most visitors come for the rides and the evening promenade. Few know they are standing beside one of the oldest manmade lakes in Gujarat.

Kankaria was built in 1451 AD by Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II, the grandson of Ahmed Shah, the founder of Ahmedabad. The original purpose was practical: a strategic water reservoir for a growing city. The name was Hauz-e-Qutub (Pool of Qutb), later referred to as Qadar Hauz.

The engineering is worth noting. The lake was built with a 32-sided polygonal embankment, a geometric design that distributes water pressure evenly and remains structurally intact today. At the centre of the lake sits Nagina Wadi, a small island garden that Mughal Emperor Jahangir and Empress Nur Jahan used as a summer retreat during their stay in Ahmedabad in 1618. The island was later landscaped into a garden and remains one of the quieter spots within the complex.

The transformation into a public destination happened in stages, culminating with the AMC’s Rs.100-crore redevelopment in 2008. Kids City, the renovated zoo, the Atal Express toy train, balloon rides, stone mural walls, a butterfly park, and the annual Kankaria Carnival all date from that era. Today the lake ranks among Gujarat’s top family destinations, drawing over one lakh visitors per week during peak season.

All major attractions at Kankaria Lake, zone by zone

Kankaria is best understood as a city within a city. Each zone has its own character, entry system, and target audience. Here is every attraction inside the complex.

1. Kids City, where children take over

Kids City is a scaled-down, fully operational miniature city where children aged 3 to 14 take on real careers: doctor, radio jockey, judge, police inspector, traffic controller, firefighter, bank teller. Each profession has a realistically designed setting staffed by trained facilitators. It is not a theme park, the experience is closer to immersive civic education.

It is the single biggest reason families return to Kankaria. A child who spends two hours in Kids City comes out with a genuine sense of what different careers feel like, the kind of hands-on learning no classroom produces. The ideal age range is 4 to 12 years.

Entry fee Rs.100 per child | Rs.50 per accompanying adult
Age range 3 to 14 years
Timings 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (Tuesday to Sunday)
Tip Arrive by 10 AM, capacity fills before noon on weekends

2. Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden, the zoo at the heart of it all

Founded in 1951 by Reuben David and rated the best zoo in Asia in 1974, the Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden covers 31 acres within the Kankaria complex. It houses around 450 mammals, 2,000 birds, and 140 reptiles across more than 65 species. Visitor favourites include the white tiger, green anaconda, giraffe, spotted deer, and the walk-through aviary. The reptile section and giraffe enclosure are the most consistently mentioned highlights in visitor reviews.

A Natural History Museum inside the zoo complex, with skeletal exhibits, taxidermy displays, and geological specimens, is worth 30 minutes, particularly for school-age children.

Zoo entry fee Rs.25 adults | Rs.15 children (separate from lake entry)
Timings 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (Tuesday to Sunday; closed Monday)
Highlights White tiger, green anaconda, walk-through aviary, Natural History Museum
Best time Before 11 AM, animals are most active in the morning

3. Atal Express toy train, a loop around the lake

Named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and imported from London, the Atal Express runs a 2.3 km narrow-gauge loop along the lake’s perimeter. It carries up to 150 passengers, takes 15 to 20 minutes per loop, and costs Rs.10 per person, one of the most affordable experiences at Kankaria and a practical way to get a sense of the full complex before exploring on foot.

Ticket Rs.10 per person (adults and children)
Ride length ~15–20 minutes per loop (2.3 km)
Frequency Runs throughout opening hours
Tip Board from the Maninagar Gate station for the best views of Nagina Wadi

4. Ahmedabad Eye (balloon safari) , Ahmedabad from 350 feet

The attraction previously known as the Balloon Safari is now officially the Ahmedabad Eye, managed by the AMC. The tethered balloon rises to approximately 350 feet, giving a clear bird’s-eye view of Kankaria Lake, Maninagar, and the wider city. It is one of the best views of Ahmedabad available without boarding a flight.

The full complex covers 3,000 square yards, divided into four sections: the balloon ride itself, a rooftop restaurant called SKYZ, a heritage exhibit on Ahmedabad’s history, and an exhibition on the making of the attraction.

Height ~350 feet above ground
Ticket ~Rs.80 per person (verify current rate at counter)
Duration 5–10 minutes per lift
Weather Suspended on windy or rainy days
Tip Visit at sunset, the view over the lake in golden hour is worth timing for

5. Nagina Wadi, the island at the centre

Nagina Wadi. Garden of Jewels, is the small island at the heart of the lake, connected to the main waterfront by a pedestrian walkway. It was once a retreat for Mughal royalty; Jahangir and Nur Jahan stayed here in 1618. Today it is landscaped with flowering plants, shaded paths, and a musical fountain with a laser light show in the evenings, the most atmospheric part of any evening visit.

No separate entry. Nagina Wadi is included in the general lake ticket, walk across from the main waterfront.

6. Boating, on the water since the Mughal era

Rowboats and pedal boats are available for hire from the main ghat on the eastern waterfront. A 30-minute session on open water, with Nagina Wadi and the Ahmedabad Eye balloon visible from the boat, is one of the more relaxed ways to spend time here.

Price ~Rs.30 per person (rowboat); pedal boats similarly priced per session
Session length 30 minutes
Timings 9:00 AM to approximately 7:00 PM
Tip Evening boating (4–6 PM), cooler air, better light on the water

7. Kankaria Amusement Park, rides for all ages

The amusement park on the southern waterfront has five main rides: the Boomerang Roller Coaster, Flipping Arm, Torching Tower, Dis-o-Pendulum, and the merry-go-round. Tickets are purchased individually at the park entrance, typically Rs.10 to Rs.50 per ride. Best visited in the late afternoon and evening when temperatures drop and the rides are lit.

Rides Boomerang Roller Coaster, Flipping Arm, Torching Tower, Dis-o-Pendulum, merry-go-round
Ticket Rs.10–Rs.50 per ride (individual purchase at park entrance)
Best time Late afternoon to evening (5–9 PM)

8. Butterfly Park and Stone Mural Park

Two free additions along the promenade that most visitors walk straight past. The Butterfly Park is a dedicated enclosure for butterfly species, included in general lake entry. The Stone Mural Park is a series of intricate pink sandstone murals on the promenade walls depicting the history of Ahmedabad, worth slowing down for as you walk the perimeter.

9. Lakefront walking track. Ahmedabad’s favourite evening walk

The 2.3-km promenade circling the lake is one of the most-used walking tracks in Ahmedabad. Wide, smooth, well-lit at night, lined with benches and greenery, and free with general lake entry. The track is accessible for mobility aids, with water stations and public restrooms placed at regular intervals. In the evenings, the lit walkway with its reflection in the water, the Nagina Wadi light show, and the Ahmedabad Eye balloon rising overhead together create a scene that few urban waterfronts in India can match.

10. Natural History Museum, the most overlooked stop

Tucked inside the zoo complex and easy to miss. The museum has geological specimens, wildlife taxidermy, skeletal displays, and panels on Gujarat’s natural ecosystems. Worth 30 minutes, especially with school-age children.

Entry Rs.10 adults | Rs.5 children
Timings 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (Tuesday to Sunday)
Highlight Bird exhibits, Gujarat geological specimens, taxidermy displays

Best time to visit Kankaria Lake

By season

October to February is the best season without question. Temperatures between 12 and 28 degrees Celsius make the full perimeter walkable, the zoo comfortable, and outdoor rides manageable. Mornings are cool; evenings have an energy that is particular to Kankaria in winter.

March to May: Ahmedabad summers run 35–45 degrees Celsius, and Kankaria gets very hot by midday. Go before 10 AM or after 6 PM. The illuminated evening waterfront in summer still draws large crowds.

June to September: Monsoon fills the lake and greens the surrounding landscape considerably. Some outdoor rides and the Ahmedabad Eye balloon are suspended on rainy days, but the lake at full capacity is worth seeing.

By day of the week

Weekdays. Tuesday to Friday, are significantly quieter than weekends. For Kids City without queues, or a peaceful promenade walk, Wednesday or Thursday mornings are the right call. Weekends are packed with families, if you come on a weekend, arrive early and expect waiting time at popular attractions.

By time of day

Morning (9–11 AM): Best for the zoo, Kids City, and Nagina Wadi. Animals are most active, temperatures are lowest, and queues are short.

Afternoon (2–4 PM): The quietest window. Useful for avoiding queues at rides.

Evening (5–9 PM): The best time. The lake is lit, the Ahmedabad Eye balloon rises against the sky, the Nagina Wadi fountain and laser show begins, food stalls are fully open, and the waterfront has the warm community energy Ahmedabad is known for.

What visitors say. Google and TripAdvisor insights

Kankaria holds a 4.4 out of 5 on TripAdvisor from over 2,000 reviews and is ranked #7 of 179 things to do in Ahmedabad. Here is what consistent themes show across reviews, positives and honest cautions.

What visitors consistently praise:

The evening experience, the illuminated lakefront and Nagina Wadi light show, comes up repeatedly, with descriptions like “magical” and “unforgettable.” Families report spending a full day for under Rs.500. Kids City is the most frequently mentioned highlight; parents note children need to be pulled away. The zoo’s white tiger, green anaconda, and walk-through aviary draw particular attention. The promenade’s accessibility for prams and elderly visitors is also a recurring point.

Common cautions:

Weekends get extremely crowded, reviews strongly recommend weekday visits or arriving before 10 AM. Some public washrooms and food stalls receive mixed ratings on cleanliness; carry hand sanitiser and choose stalls carefully. The full perimeter walk is 2.3 km, harder on busy days for visitors with limited mobility. Most ride and activity counters are cash only.

Note: Ratings sourced from TripAdvisor as of early 2026. Check recent reviews before visiting for the most current feedback.

Food at Kankaria Lake, what to eat and where

📷 [IMAGE: Street food stalls at Kankaria Lake, bhajiya, dabeli, chaat, or ice gola. Pexels: ‘indian street food stall’]

No visit to Kankaria is complete without eating. The stalls along the lakefront cover Ahmedabad’s street food in a fairly complete way: bhajiya and pakora (the standard evening snack at lakeside Sabarmati Riverfront stalls), dabeli (sweet-spicy Kutchi potato filling in a toasted bun), ice gola and ice cream on warm afternoons, pav bhaji and chaat near the main gates, roasted corn on coal at the waterfront, and fresh sugarcane juice near the Maninagar Gate entrance.

For a sit-down meal, the SKYZ Rooftop Restaurant inside the Ahmedabad Eye complex is the best option within the complex itself.

The Kankaria Carnival. Ahmedabad’s grandest annual event

📷 [IMAGE: Kankaria Carnival, fireworks over the lake, cultural stage performance, or lit-up waterfront. Pexels: ‘fireworks lake india carnival’]

Every year, in the last week of December, the AMC turns Kankaria into one of the largest free public festivals in India. The Kankaria Carnival has run since 2008 and draws over 10 lakh visitors across seven days.

During the Carnival, all zones open free of charge. A main stage hosts cultural performances every evening. Fireworks go up over the lake each night. Food courts run from Gujarati street food to international snacks. The full programme includes magic shows, rangoli competitions, dog shows, scuba diving, laser shows, and gymnastics.

If you are planning a December visit to Ahmedabad, time it for the Carnival week. Read our dedicated guide: Kankaria Carnival Ahmedabad, complete guide (dates, events, tips and what to expect).

What else is at Kankaria: lesser-known spots most visitors miss

Beyond the ticketed attractions, several places within the complex go largely unnoticed.

The Dutch and Armenian Tombs at One Tree Hill Garden, just beside the lake, date to the early 17th century. The domed tombs with stylised ornamentation indicate noble heritage. A short hike to the top gives panoramic lake views.

The Stone Mural Park along the lakefront walls, already covered in the attractions section, is genuinely worth slowing down for. The Butterfly Park is a peaceful break between activities and is included in general entry.

Balvatika (Chacha Nehru Children’s Park) has been under renovation since June 2024. Check AMC announcements for a reopening date before visiting specifically for this.

Nearby, if you want to extend the day: Sarkhej Roza (~8 km), the 15th-century mosque complex, makes an excellent second stop. Law Garden (~5 km) works in the evening for handicrafts shopping. The Sabarmati Riverfront (~7 km) offers a very different urban waterfront for comparison.
